Technology marches on

The speed at which new technology is developed often astounds me. Without wishing to sound like some living dinosaur from a backwater town, I am still able to claim that much of my youth was spent without use or access to even basic computers, never mind games consoles and smartphones! This isn't a nostalgic post about my pre-technology years however.... It is a post about the latest development, the flexible "paper-phone"

Some big brained guys at Queens University in Canada have invented a prototype of a smartphone just millimetres thick which can be manipulated like a piece of paper. The even cooler thing is that to use some of the phones functions you bend it!

These particular boffins believe that many more technologies will be similar to this within 5 years...(maybe so, but probably not affordably so!!)

I like the idea of this technology, but I must admit I'd be a little concerned about my phone being blown away in the wind!

On the bandwagon

Last weekend everyone seemed to be far, far, far, far more interested in the royal wedding than me. (I do know of a few others who didn't partake in any celebrations, but truly not many.) I'm not a fan of weddings to start with, I'm not a monarchist, and I despise pomp so this was never going to be a thing of excitement. I was quite pleased to get an extra day off work however ;)

As soon as the wedding was announced everyone who paid even the slightest amount of attention was talking about the dress, and the flowers, and what the after party would be like and on the day itself every channel (with the exception of E4 - thankyou E4 you saved my life!) was showing approximately 6 - Yes 6! - hours of footage of the events. Thanks to a combination of E4 and the lovely internet I did manage to see exactly zero of said footage. *phew!*

The news over the last few days has obviously also been filled with stories about the wedding. There have been wild theories thought up as posted by the wonderful B-Man, but it seems that the biggest star to erupt from the wedding has been not the bride or groom, or even the brides mother, but a hat....

The hat worn by Princess Beatrice to be exact....

Ugly huh? The hat amassed fans (or rather haters) on facebook within minutes, spawned blogs and websites such as Princess Beatrice and her Hat and Princess Beatrice's Hat and countless news articles.

I think that this hat looks very much like the type of mirror used by the evil queen in Snow White... maybe she was trying to ensure that she was the fairest in the land?

others however have had their own ideas....

Then again, there no such thing as bad publicity...all the media interest must be great for Beatrice....She'll get offers for reality TV next...

Stolen!

Some of you may have seen a mass of posts on FaceBook recently called 30 day song challenge...for those of you lucky enough not to have your wall filled by people posting random songs, the idea is similar to a meme, but requires sharing a song from Youtube for each answer each day.

I didn't fancy putting mine on Facebook but I thought I'd share here instead.. so here is my song challenge (not over 30 days!)

1. Favourite Song (....of the moment because I can never make my mind up!)

2. Least Favourite Song ...(do I have to choose one?? theres so many!)

3. A song that makes you happy

4. A song that makes you sad

5. A song that reminds you of someone (For some reason this song reminds me of my friend Graeme G, I could swear its him singing it!)

6. A song that reminds you of somewhere (oddly an old workplace!)

7. A song that reminds you of a certain event

8. A song that you know all the words to (probably most of the ones I have/am going to post!!)

9. A song that you can dance to (surely you mean a song that you WILL dance to...? this does guarantee my presence on the dance floor!)

10. A song that make you fall asleep and feel relaxed

11. A song from your favourite band (one of my favourite bands!)

12. A song from a band you hate

13. A song that is a guilty pleasure

14. A song no one would expect you to love (I think after the above selection I couldn't surprise you with anything!)

15. A song that describes you (...because I can laugh at myself too)

I think I'll stop here for a while and let your ears cool down...Part 2 soon!

Easter

Sometimes I prepare for a post and then hold onto the information...waiting until the time is right to strike!....or at least until that event comes round again so my posts aren't completely out of season!

This weekend has been Easter, and having had a couple of conversations with various people I noticed that most people don't know anything about Easter. Especially why the date changes every year!

so here it is... Barbies guide to Easter/Spring festival...

The date of Easter changes every year - This seems a little odd to my mind, as Easter in the form it is commonly celebrated in Christian countries, is a celebration of the death and rebirth of jesus - Surely the date of such an event wouldn't change? So why does it? The answer seems to be that instead of out-rightly adopting the pagan celebration at the Spring Equinox (usually accepted as 21 March) the church decided to use this date as a starting point and work from there. Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. (Anywhere between March 22 and April 25)

Traditions surrounding Easter vary wildly in different countries. I recently saw a TV programme where a guy from the UK visited Mexico during Easter and was often heard muttering "but where's my chocolate eggs?" whilst watching the celebrations. In the UK the majority of people celebrate Easter by buying, and exchanging chocolate eggs. So what is this fascination with eggs at easter? There could be several reasons for this, one is that the pre-christion religions often incorporated eggs in their spring traditions, and this was adopted to enable a smoother transition to Christianity. Other ideas include that eggs are forbidden during lent (along with many other items) so the giving of eggs in the following festival would be considered something to celebrate.

The eggs are delivered by the Easter bunny - Santa Claus in a rabbit suit maybe... - Rabbits and hares are another common symbol among pre-christian traditions in relation to fertility so this connection is - to me at least - fairly obvious.

As always there are many other ideas and beliefs out there that could be included here, but each post would take hours to read!

Regardless, whether you celebrate Easter, Vernal Equinox, Ostara, Passover, or Zombie Jesus Day (I know its a little late for some of those) I wish you peace, joy and chocolate. (because regardless of your faith everyone needs chocolate!)
