Barbies newest challenge

Whilst I practice martial arts, it's not the best way to keep fit - especially my art as it relies on being relaxed and soft, not using any strength.  So I'm not very food at keeping fit/working out.  I find gyms unbearably boring and the idea of going for a run makes me stick to the sofa even harder. Swimming is fun, but the problem with public pools is that they are public and have other people in! I will use the pool in the fancy hotels I get to stay in though.

So I thought I needed to try something different....and I did.  Polefit!  If you've not coma across it, it is basically pole dancing for fitness. It's not stripping or lap dancing - I have overheard someone in the lift on my way to class say "there's a lap dance class round here somewhere"

Whist it can look very beautiful and graceful, generally what happens in a pole class is that a group of people get very hot and sweaty whilst some of them manage to pull of elaborate moves whilst others struggle to hoist themselves onto the pole.  This all takes place to a background of loud music (not the 'banging techno' you get in gyms but a mix of random up-tempo songs), the occasional cheer of accomplishment, and a whole heap of giggles and laughter.

What most people wouldn't realise is the strength that pole dancing requires, both physical and mental! My entire body is sore for days after a class but my strength has already improved massively (I was pretty strong before, but not in the right muscles!) many of the moves also rely on you gripping a metal pole with your skin...to say that it 'nips' it quite an understatement...I have a good pain threshold and I felt sick after hanging from the pole by the inside of my elbow! You also need a bit of mental strength to throw yourself upside down and hang from your legs/hands/limbs, trusting that you won't fall and land on the floor in a heap (although that can happen!).

I would love to post a photo of me looking graceful hanging from a pole but there's no way I'm letting anyone take pictures of me doing it yet! (at least without heavy use of photoshop!)

Most classes are open to men and women so if you fancy a real challenge I really would recommend giving it a try...just don't blame me when you can't walk the next day!

Firewalk with me...

No, this post is not about the twin peaks movie. Next Friday I will be walking over 15 feet of hot coals to raise money for char-ity (*cough* excuse the pun) I'm very excited, and as the day draws closer I'm also getting rather nervous!

Walking on hot coals is a massive challenge, and one that many people would shy away from (based on the reaction most people have given of asking if I'm completely insane) but I think my mind/body can hold up to it....If not this is going to hurt! I'll be getting as many photos and videos as possible as evidence of my trial, maybe more to prove to myself that I did it than for anyone else as I'm pretty sure it will all feel like a bit of a dream afterwards.

Wish me luck folks! (or if it goes wrong, send bandages!)

Genius provokes more Genuis

A new programme started last week on BBC2 called Genius. I'm not a huge fan of most TV, but the ad looked funny and it is hosted by one of my all time favourite comedians, Dave Gorman. I'm not good at remembering when things are on so I relied on the trusty V+ box to record it and watched it today. If you haven't heard of it the idea is quite simple, people email in with ideas and Dave with another comedian (this episode had Frank Skinner) decide whether or not the ideas are Genius. (Its a new show so could go either way at this stage)

Three of the ideas people presented were actually pretty good though, one was to teach mathematical theories using dance, one was a new law of opposites based on an items function rather than its mass and shape, and one was to make criminals ride a certain number of miles on exercise bikes whilst in prison to provide renewable energy. All pretty crazy, funny, yet almost compelling ideas.

The Bike idea however did set my mind going, and within 2 minutes I had solved the western worlds problems in one fowl swoop...here's the plan....

Hook up all the exercise machines in every gym across the country to the power grid. This will provide free electricity whilst people get fit - Image the juice one spin class could generate!

Due to the reduction in running costs these gyms could then offer discounted membership rates, resulting in even more people joining. This has 2 effects, 1. More energy being created and 2. people who wouldn't normally visit the gym getting fitter

So there you go, in a few easy steps we have solved both the energy crisis and the obesity crisis :) Genius eh?

One Armed Bandit

I've hurt my shoulder! I'm not really quite sure how, but I have little-to-no mobility and a huuuuugge amount of pain :( Fear not however, it's safely tucked away in a sling, slavered with ibuprofen gel, I'm just having to cope with life single handed for a while. Makes me appreciate just how much I use my left arm though...

Stupid girl

Most people will have seen this stupid stupid girl on the news last week...

She initially claimed that she asked for three stars on her face and fell asleep so the tattoo artist carried on drawing stars.

Anyone with any knowledge of tattoos knew that this was utter trash - mainly because no professional tattoo artist would just keep on going once they have completed what they were asked to do, it would be suicide for their career if nothing else! The kindly artist did offer to pay half of the fee for removal but now the girl in question has admitted that she asked for all 56 stars to be inked on her face and only changed her mind about them when her father saw them and was angry. Papers reported today that the artist has now withdrawn his offer.

HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHa. Thats what you get for lying stupid girl! Hopefully you will now learn some important lessons...

1. think before getting any tattoo - theyre very likely with you forever
2. Don't lie - especially to the media - because it just makes you look like a prat
3. tattoo removal hurts far more than getting the tattoo

Battered

I have a Ninjutsu class twice a week and I really enjoy it. Not only is it fun but its social and helps me be a bit fitter(I'm not a fan of normal boring exercise) This week however I seemed to be the most dangerous and accident prone student I have ever seen.... Monday night I landed full force on a colleagues outdoor tabi boot with my shin which has left a massive purple and black bruise down my shin. Last night, I managed to trap my little toe in a hole in the mat halfway through a roll, snapping it out to one side (I now think it may be broken but its a little toe so theres not much that can be done). I also got elbowed in the cheek during a routine attack which was a surprise but hasn't damaged me any. I've somehow managed to bruise two of the knuckles on my right hand so I actually do look like I've been scrapping.

The boys I train with have now gotten used to hitting me as hard as I hit them (Its only taken a year!) which is no bad thing but I'm going to have to work on some conditioning to stop these damn bruises!

"Girlie" Night

Ok, I am not a "Girlie" Girl, I'm generally a bit of a Ladette in fact. Tonight however I'm on my own with no agenda and nothing to keep me entertained... These nights often end in turmoil when boredom kicks in and I take scissors to my hair (much to the complete horror of my hairdresser even though I only visit once a year) In order to stave off the want to cut my locks I'm going to do all the horrid girlie things I only do occassionally. My list of "chores" for the night are:

Wash my hair
Use a face mask
Choose random colours to paint my nails
Paint fingernails
Epilate entire body

For anyone who hasn't encountered an epilator, its a machine which acts like many many pairs of tweezers and rips hairs our of any body part you apply it to. Its fairly painful (Thankfully I have a majorly high pain threshold) but works wonders. If you want to see just how scary this contraption is...heres a video -

And women (probably some men too) put themselves through this??!
